Dr. Sam Speron, Chicago Plastic Surgeon, Chosen as Candidate to Receive $250K Grant from Chase & Living Social Mission: Small Business

Dr. Sam Speron, Chicago Plastic Surgeon, Chosen as Candidate to Receive $ 250K Grant from Chase & Living Social Mission: Small Business
Park Ridge, IL (PRWEB) May 15, 2012
Dr. Sam Speron, Chicago Plastic Surgeon, has been chosen as a candidate to receive a $ 250K grant from Chase & Living Social Mission: Small Business!
Dr. Sam Speron has been approved and deemed eligible to receive a $ 250,000 grant in order to expand his reconstructive surgery practice by the Mission: Small Business program. Chase Bank USA, National Association has teamed up with Living Social, Inc. to sponsor the Mission: Small Business program with the shared goal of promoting awareness of the role that small businesses play in their communities.
The process consists of each small business owner submitting an application, which outlines how the business is involved with the local community and the future goals of the business, as well as potential challenges and how they will be overcome.
Dr. Sam Speron has been in solo private practice since 2000 and is a proud member of both the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) and the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ASAPS). He is also board certified with the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
As medical technologies have boomed over the past two decades, plastic surgery has made incredible advances both in reconstructing accidental injuries and congenital deformities, and in helping erase the marks, wrinkles and sags of encroaching age. Whether it’s changing a portion of the body to make it look normal, improving a “normal” facet of the body to make it look even more aesthetically pleasing or using reconstructive surgery to improve the look and function of a body part after any specific trauma, the goal of the plastic surgeon is to help the patient look good and feel good about him or herself.
“The grant money would enable me to fulfill my lifelong dream of starting a charity organization that would allow me to help patients in medical need who are going through financial hardships. My goal would be to provide one free reconstructive surgery procedure once a month” says Dr. Sam Speron, Chicago plastic surgeon and consumer advocate. “With the recent economic downturn, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of people who have been greatly affected financially and either have no job, no health insurance or both.”
In order to be fully considered for the grant, each small business must obtain 250 votes through the Misson: Small Business website at http://www.missionsmallbusiness.com. This can be done by clicking on the “Support” button, logging in through a Facebook account and then proceeding to choose a business to vote for. Please look for our business name – Dr Speron Plastic Surgery -and then vote for us! We would appreciate it.
Find out a little bit more about us and our commitment to this cause from our application Q & A:
Q. How is your business involved with the community you serve?
A. “My practice has always been involved in many different areas both in our local community, as well as multiple other charitable foundations and activities throughout the year.
First of all, I have always been proud to be born and raised in the Chicago area from immigrant parents. I learned a lot growing up about the benefits of a strong work ethic as well as being kind to all of my neighbors. The greater Chicago area (including Park Ridge) have endured many unique challenges over the last decade. Communities in general are always struggling to balance their budgets and be a positive influence for all of their citizens. Any shortfalls, I believe, are best served by the members of that local community working together and pitching in to help out wherever they can. Actions always speak louder than words and I always try to be humble and be as anonymous as possible. There is no point to charity if the sole intent is to crave the spotlight or make yourself seem larger than the reality of the situation.
To be honest, I always feel I can do more and that is my intent here, to hopefully start something I have wanted to do for a long time.”
Q. What would a $ 250k grant mean to your business plan and how will you utilize the funds to ensure long-term growth and stability?
A. “$ 250K is clearly a lot of money. While the public believes that all doctors are rich beyond belief, the stigma of the plastic surgeon is even worse. Based on my experience, most patients and people still think that I probably live an extraordinary life. The truth is that we do not make millions of dollars every year. We do not operate on celebrities non-stop.
The reality is that our profession enables us to do a fair amount of cosmetic as well as reconstructive surgery. The hours are very demanding and sometimes patients can be very unrealistic and frustrating. It is a constant challenge to wake up every day and want to help people. I do it because I love it. There is nothing else I would rather do. I do not do this for the money. I do it for the same reason I went to medical school – to simply help people.
However, in today’s economic climate where expenses have skyrocketed, malpractice insurance rates continue to climb, and insurance reimbursements continue to fall, sustaining a solo private practice is getting harder every day. Add to this the fact that most doctors finishing training are now going to work for big groups like Advocate, North Shore and Resurrection in the Chicago area, it becomes clear that a solo medical practitioner is becoming an endangered species.
This grant money would allow me to stay active in solo practice while fulfilling my dream of helping patients with financial hardship, which with the recent economic downturn has become a much greater percentage of the general population.
My final hope is that with the grant money I will be able to start an actual living and breathing entity and charity organization so that we can do more than just help patients in need of reconstructive surgery. I would also like to do some charity work specifically with hospitalized children around major holidays like Christmas. I would use my persuasive abilities to try and convince some doctors in other specialties to join me. Once we have a solid foundation of donors and infrastructure, I think the model can sustain long-term growth and stability and do much for the Chicago area.”
Q. What types of challenges can you identify with your plan and how will you overcome them?
A. “Probably the biggest challenge would be to make sure that I can adequately screen the patients. I imagine that I will receive many inquiries for free plastic surgery, cosmetic and reconstructive. I would probably have a submission form on my website(s) as well as social media pages like Facebook.
I think I would try to recruit my followers into helping me sort out who they think are the bigger priorities. This way, they would feel involved and I would get help sorting thru the different stories.
While everyone will have some difficult or sad tale to tell, I think another huge challenge would be to try and verify it’s validity. I would have to look at specific resources for each situation and try to make sure patients are not trying to be untruthful. I think it will be critical to come up with a set of rules and criteria to make the process as fair as possible.
Additionally, there will inevitably be more challenges that come up but as long as we have a strong mission statement and commitment to helping others, we should be able to adapt and grow.”
Q. Describe the talent on your team and how they make your business successful.
A. “I have worked very hard to try and surround myself with staff that are basically nice people. I believe that I can train someone to perform a procedure fairly easily if they have the desire to learn and are committed to excellence. However, if they are truly a nice persona and really care, then I can rest assured that they will never have any intention of harming a patient. That specific drive and daily purpose are critical to ensuring both safety of patient care, as well as compassion towards the patient as an individual.
As medicine has become modernized and salaries have diminished, it is more important than ever to make sure staff stay focused on helping people. That is who we are and what we do. And we do it over and over, every day.
There are many different talents in the world and the right combination and blend can help make a practice successful. the wrong combination can help destroy one. The struggle is to find the right staff and the next struggle is always to maintain them. People go thru many things in their lives and staff is no different. At the end of the day, i like to think we are a family. We stick together and have a common purpose. That is why we are successful as a team.
I believe that our mission statement, which was developed 13 years ago, is worth noting:
Wanting to spend time with his patients and build a long-lasting relationship with them, Dr. Speron decided to start his own practice. This is what you can expect from Dr. Speron and his staff:
· Friendly and expert health-care
· Advanced medical technology
· Understandable information about procedures and tests
· Appointments that meet your needs
· A staff that respects your time
· Answers to your questions and concerns
· An enthusiasm to treat you as an individual
These are the high expectations Dr. Speron and his staff will strive to meet every day…”
